Merlin Epp is the heart and soul of Mt. Rainier Leadership Camp. Merlin Epp taught at Federal Way High School, teaching US history to countless students over the course of his career. His strong, charismatic voice also earned him the position of the Voice of the Eagles at football and basketball games. Along with his passion for teaching and leadership, Merlin loved New York City, the Yankees, cooking, the symphony, and US history. Thomas Jefferson was his personal idol and he could speak on the Constitution and politics with anyone. Jazz music was his favorite and singing was a cherished past time. Through his passion for education, Merlin became involved in the Washington State Leadership program. Merlin spent 43 years of his life dedicated to Mt. Rainier Leadership Camp and the students of Washington State. Merlin started as a Senior Counselor and transitioned to Assistant Director and finally Director.
It is in his honor and memory that we have established the Merlin Epp Fund. Through the Rainier Camp Store, donations, and other fundraising efforts, the Merlin Fund is able to sponsor scholarships for students to attend camp each summer. We have focused on inclusion and welcoming schools that have not participated in the leadership program for the last five years. We have also been fortunate to raise enough funds to make improvements to the campsite, like installing fans the fans in the meeting hall. Every year at the end of camp, Merlin would dress like Merlin the magician – his message and the week of camp is what we call ‘Rainier Magic’. Merlin and his love for Mt. Rainier Leadership Camp is the magic you will feel during your week at camp. It is because of Merlin that you will feel you have found a second family. You are part of this family now and we look forward to sharing the magic with you.
